Trees in Winter

Trees are sanctuaries.
Whoever knows how to speak to them, whoever knows how to listen to them, can learn the truth.
Hermann Hesse

On a winter day made for lingering....a winter day filled with warm memories and hours made for wasting....I encountered a simple joy, silhouetted against the sky. There are lessons waiting to be learned from the sanctuary of a tree in winter....lessons about the importance of roots, the benefits of branching out. Lessons that teach of the value of being flexible and how important it is to shed some bark in order to grow. Lessons of the greatness of men who plant trees they know they'll never rest beneath. Lessons of survival, even against unimaginable danger. What I'd have missed if I hadn't stopped along the way to listen to this tree.....a simple joy standing sentinel, holding the tiny buds of spring deep inside.

I love some of your lessons learned. Thank you. We need to be reminded, now and then...

WoW! Absolutely beautiful, both the picture and the words. "Buds of spring" -- giving hope!

I have never met a tree I did not like and now you put it into to words why.
